    Re: Autocross Tips

I may not be the most competitive, but trust me on one thing....SUNSCREEN.   If its cloudy, SUNSCREEN.  If its sunny and cold, SUNSCREEN.   Even if its raining lightly, SUNSCREEN.

Nothing can ruin a good (or bad day) of autocrossing like a week of nursing a sunburn.

    Re: Autocross Tips

On the air pressure thing I'll say for the new person coming in on regular street tires you'll want more air in them, I'm going to say about 5-8 lbs more but if someone knows a better number then please correct me.  I saw a new guy last year almost roll his tires off the rim because he didn't put any air in his tires.  Really it looked like the rim was touching the asphalt.

    Re: Autocross Tips

For all the rookies and first timers: just have fun and learn the course - DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, try to show up and win for the first couple of events. I tried that and DNF'ed every single damn run for the first 3 events. That has to be the worst auto-x career start of all time.

I'll see your 3 DNF's and raise you one broken leg and not walking the whole course. for the worst autocross career start of all time.Stick out tongue

Yes sunscreen, take it easy at first and ad more air to the tires are all good. Also don't be afraid to ask for help the folks at the SPS trailer can be a good start. If they don't know they will get you to someone that will.

    Re: Autocross Tips

Below is what I send to all the novices that contact me via email.  Keep in mind that this list of tips was prepared for St. Louis Region competitors, and some times/rules may not apply in other regions verbatim.  If anyone has any ideas to improve this please let me know and I'll be happy to implement them.

Here are some useful links which will help you learn more about the sport...

    1. Tips for getting started in autocross.  Check out the great links on the right side.
    http://www.stlsolo.org/GettingStarted/tabid/58/Default.aspx
    2. The St. Louis Region SCCA Solo2/Autocross specific website.  You will find the schedule of events and calendar here.
    http://www.stlsolo.org
    3. The St. Louis Region SCCA general website.  Our region does a lot more than just Solo/Autocross.  Check it out!
    http://www.stlscca.org
    4. The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), the sanctioning body for our autocross events.  Visit the Solo page.
    http://www.scca.com
    5. The Official St. Louis Region SCCA forums. < A Great place to ask questions and chat about the previous or next race.

When you are ready to compete in an event, here are some things to keep in mind.
    1. Try to arrive at the event before 8am.
    2. When you arrive you will get the choice of heat ticket.  Choose any heat but keep in mind that a later heat will allow you to watch and learn from the earlier heats before getting your turn   Needs to be updated for 2007.
    3. Bring with you sunscreen, water, snacks/food, a hat, sunglasses, umbrella and/or rain suit if you think you might need them.  We don't stop for heat, rain, or lunch, so be prepared.
    4. You will also need to identify your car number and class in some way.  Check the guidelines at http://tinyurl.com/kmqp7    Most regulars use magnets, but you can print large numbers on 8.5"x11" paper and tape to your door as well.  Solo Performance Specialties has a trackside store which can print numbers for you the morning of the event.  You'll need a helmet as well but the region has plenty of loaner helmet for free.  Otherwise, again check out the trackside store if you would rather buy one.
    5. At 9:30am I will conduct the Rookie Walkthrough at each event. (Need to update time)  You'll find me at the starting line of the course.  I'll point out some of the critical aspect of the course and I can address any other questions you may have at that time as well.  You don't have to wait for me to walk the course though; walk it as much as you can.

Here's a list of things to do when you arrive at the event..
    1. Drive up, choose a heat ticket and sign the insurance waiver.
    2. Register at the registration trailer.  You will need your driver's license, cash/check/charge, and a number and class in mind.
    3. Clean your car out and take it to the TECH area for inspection.
    4. Walk the course as many times as you can.
    5. Meet me at the starting line at 9:30am for the Rookie Walkthrough.
    6. Drivers meeting at 10:15am.
