Gas/Diesel Prices 2008 : How high will it go?!
I'm trying to get an idea of what we could be in for. Gas and Diesel prices are rising and there seems to be no plateau. I suspect it could keep going until we match the price paid for fuel in Europe. Current Diesel Price $USD / Gallon USA (St. Louis, MO) = $4.69 UK (Average) = $8.43 Can someone check my math on the UK $/gallon. Sources report that Diesel is 112.5p (GBP Pence) / liter. With current USD/GBP conversion and assuming 3.8L/gallon, I get $8.43. That is CRAZY! My economic stimulus check is going to be wasted on fuel!

Yup, it's $8.61 according to this article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/27/AR2008052702640.html?referrer=emailarticle

Re: Gas/Diesel Prices 2008 : How high will it go?!
My guess,,,,,,,,Regular / National Average $4.30 Gal. at the peak of the summer. Then it will retreat about a dollar - for a while. HOWEVER, if ANYTHING happens - ANYWHERE, it will be seen as an excuse to keep it higher / longer. When the speculitive bubble bursts, some people / funds will loose some money but the individual who begins to chase the price now will be the ones hurt the most. The guys "in the know" have already made their money, or will shortly. But I predict the price will NEVER fall below $3.00 Gal. ever again. If nothing "happens", I predict a steadier price at about $5.00 in 2 years, and gradeully rising ~10% a year. (If nothing happens!!)

Re: Gas/Diesel Prices 2008 : How high will it go?!
When comparing gas prices with European countries, most of the difference is probably from taxes. Some countries finance most of their road construction and maintenance from gas taxes. Which IMHO makes sense, because the people using the roads are paying for them. Here in the US, the roads are paid from other taxes. You're paying for them, one way or another.

I agree about the taxes, except, ours do go for roads, just not as much. And as far as maintenance - we just don't do any !

Re: Gas/Diesel Prices 2008 : How high will it go?!
The difference is due to taxes. Most other countries (including most of europe) inlcuded a 60-75% premium tax for gas. Here is the US, they avoid at all costs increases to our fuel tax.

Re: Gas/Diesel Prices 2008 : How high will it go?!
Anybody see those adds that Dodge is running about guaranteed gas or diesel for $2.99/gal for 12k miles if you buy a Dodge? I can't imagine how they police that and see this ploy putting them out of business when diesel is twice that next year. Almost makes me want to go buy a new truck.
I guess they give you pre-paid gas cards, but imagine it to be a pain as you'll have to go to certain gas stations.

I believe you have to pay with a CC and then they reimburse you the difference. Anyway, I'm sure they'll make their money with a higher interest rate or cost of the vehicle. It sure is tough waiting those 2 minutes for the next subway train to come along when you just miss one.

Re: Gas/Diesel Prices 2008 : How high will it go?!
Like Mike said, it may fall back, but will go up again for sure. It certinly isn't ever going to go back down except on a temporary basis. The fact is we need alternatives. For the time being we can be "less bad" by being more efficient, but fundamental change is going to be required. Simply drilling for more oil and being more efficient will only put the ultimate problem off. The issue goes deeper than the car, which is simply the most visible consumer of oil, as nearly everything we do is dependant on oil in some manner.

Re: Gas/Diesel Prices 2008 : How high will it go?!
RandeH:Company in France is working on a set of city cars that run on compressed air with a range of 100 miles or so per tank! Saw it on the news this morning. Going to push it in developing countries, especially India. If sold in large enough #'s would help curb the oil use and reduce CO2 emissions greatly.
It won't matter if the energy used to compress the air is garnered from burning coal or oil That, as Bryan points out, is the real issue.

In India you can always hire a couple of guys off the street to work a manual air pump for a $5 a day each.
