Izzy's
All bound up
After the T&T last weekend, I tore into the RX7 again to fix some minor issues and give the car a once over. First on the list was the binding in the throttle. Pulled the throttle cable and the carb was still binding, so off the carb came. Started going through the carb step by step looking for anything binding or any shiney metal. About two minutes later I found the culprit. The accelerator pump diaphram rod/spring was being put in a bind at a bad angle. Pulled one end of the rod free and the bind disappeared. Flipped the rod over to attach from the opposite side, and the bind was gone. Tossed some Redline Grease on the shaft and spring for good measure and bolted the carb back up.
Second on the list was to redo the fuel test port. I originally had a Holley 1-5psi fuel pressure regulator on the car and a shut off valve T'd off for a test port (required by the rules to make sure we're not running funny fuel... even though the rotaries run best on 87 octane
). After rebuilding the Holley FPR 3 times that I remember since owning the car, I went with the cheapo Purolator "Dial-A-Pressure" that I bought off of Pete Zeckert many moons ago for $5. Works like a champ and is spot on according to my FP guage. Problem is, it only has one in and one out (Holley has two outs). So, I decided to move the test port out of the engine compartment and all of the 1,500 deg. header heat and MSD sparkage and place it out back plummed into the return line. That way, it's still regulated down to 2ish psi and is tucked up out of the way of any chance of being turned on.
Finally hooked up my EGT guage and probes. Now I'll just need to remember how to change jets and I'll be golden!
I'm still pretty amazed when the car fires up on the first try. I spent so long fighting the previous motors low compression and flakey ignition that I assumed that's how it was supposed to be. Thanks again to Steven B. at Tuxedo Park Racing!
Still debating on whether or not to run Memphis, or hold out for the PDX at GIR then do Topeka in July for a B-Day present to myself. Speaking of B-Days... happy b-day to Adam... otherwise known as Izzy! 4 years old tomorrow!
