"I'd rather be fabricating"....

Every once in a while I need a reminder of why I hate mechanical work on cars. Today was that day.

I started out doing a CV boot replacement on my "new" SE-R. I decided on the short term fix of a split boot/quick boot as I didn't want the all day process that half shaft replacement can sometimes end up being. Started out at about 10am. Read through the instructions on the boot and found that it's going to be a 2+ hour process no matter what as the glue has to cure for an hour before you do the next step. Glue the one side together then jack the car up, pull the wheel, pull the caliper & pads, clean up the gunk from the MIA CV boot, clean out the bearings, grease/pack the joint.... then... wait. While I'm waiting, I decide to start replacing motor mounts. I had purchased a set of Prothane mounts after reading the rave reviews of them on several SE-R & Nissan forums. Seemed straightforward enough. Pull the mounts, press out the old, press in the new & install.

Now, I've never claimed to be a mechanical genious (hopefully I'll remember to spell check that ;)), but I'm not half bad. Every once in a while a project just kicks my butt. The mounts all came off just fine, going back on was another story. Ended up having to chase 3 mount threads, probably stripped one... or at least seized it so bad that the next time I try and get it off, it'll break off. The 1st mount took me an hour to get back on. I finally just took the grinder to the urethane insert for bolt clearance on either side of the mount. 2nd mount went ok, 3rd mount took me at least 5 hours-3 of which were probably spent trying to snake my way around the jack supporting the motor and the jackstand supporting the tranny, only to have found that I misplaced either the bolt, the pry bar, the socket, ratchet or extension and had to crawl back out to look for it.

I took a look at the 4th mount at 11:30 pm and said "F that".... besides, all the SE-R guys say that replacing that mount leads to more vibration through the steering wheel.... Good enough reason for me!

The split boot went on without too much hassle other than the goofy clamp didn't want to clamp and ended up coming apart on me.

Anyway, that's enough mechanical for me for the time being. Back to fabrication, where if it doesn't fit, keep grinding Big Smile On that front, I'm still working on a horseless carriage project (pics soon), I've got some IT doorbar updates coming in the door soon in preparation for next seasons rule changes, another E30 cage coming in October, an altered wheelbase 5 window coupe coming in as a fiberglass shell and a Fox body Mustang coming for a 6 point. I also keep eyeing the SE-R for a 4 point bar.... Heck, the headliners already out... Big Smile

I took a look at the 4th mount ->> tranny mount

Do I pass the test?  ;)
