Izzy's Custom Cages

Racing and Project Blog

Pretty stiff eh?

After a short "honey-do" break, I tackled another 944 cage. This 944 Turbo will be competeing in the Porsche Club of Americas very open GT class. The owner says that it should be putting down between 450-500 HP once he get's it tweaked on the dyno. Now that the cage is complete, the car will go under the knife and get a new composite front end, Lexan windshield and hatch glass.

The car arrived with the hoop and rear supports of a bolt in cage that had been quickly added before an open track day. After several frustrating attempts to install the forward downbars, the owner threw in the towel and decided to go with a completely new cage. The hoop was welded to the car, but didn't take much to remove it. The kit bar was unharmed, so if anyone is looking for a kit for their 944, let me know and I'll get you in touch with the owner.

The new cage has 8 standard attachment points inside the cabin of the chassis. In addition to those 8, it's also tied in to 14 other spots on the rockers, windshield and roof headers, and the A & B pillars. A NASCAR style bar on the drivers side with a ladder style passenger side bar, with the lower bars tied into the rockers and following the upward angle of the sill to the main hoop. The cage also features a roof diagonal across the sunroof plug as well as a rear X and cross bar between the rear hoop braces. Definitely STIFF!

Hot on the heels of the 944 will be an E30 BMW for a "Open Track Day" 4 point bar. This will be an interesting one as the owner wants to retain the full interior, including the rear seat and seat back.

Muggy will be coming back in for some repairs after his sucessfully outing at the 100 Acre Woods rally this past February. We'll be fiixing some floorpan damage, trying to add to the exhaust systems longevity and adding a fresh air intake to the roof. I think I'll keep the Plasma Cutter under lock and key for that one as I know Jeff get's weak in the knees and a goofy look on his face when one's in the room.

After Jeff will be Mike Glassburners ITB Omni in for some updates to take advantage of the new doorbar rules (starting 1/1/07, 2 doorbars per side and in IT, NASCAR bars allowed on both sides) and a little grocery list of other additions. It'll be July before I know it!!!
