As soon as Bud Scott's new IT7 car was out the door, another big project started involving three Mazda Miatas.

The first of the three Miata's (or is that Miatae?) is in the shop for a cage installation.

The cage is being built to NHRA specs for when the owner takes it to the drag strip, but the Miata will mainly see street duty.

The owner want's to retain the use of the convertable top which makes for some interesting fitment issues. Anyone who's sat in a Miata knows that the room is tight and tossing a cage in one makes for close quarters.

So far so good though! The cage is being made using 1.75"x.135 wall DOM for the Main hoop and Downbars, 1.625x.125 for the doorbars and 1.5x.120 for the harness and dashbar. We're including a dashbar for 3 reasons... stiffness, safety and because the owner is converting it to Right Hand Drive!

Unfortunately, half way through the main hoop, the hydraulic unit on the Hossfeld bender decided that it had seen better days. We ordered up a new unit and converted over to a backup hand pump unit. While starting on the passenger side downbar, the ram unit gave up the ghost as well. Luckily, I had ordered a new ram as well so downtime will be short.

Pics of the Miatas progress will be on my website soon.
