The SCCA legal, custom rollcage for the Improved Touring B, Ford Pinto is complete! The owner picked up the car this morning and was excited about the way it turned out!
It's always fun to watch someone try and get into a streetcar turned racecar for the first time. No more just hopping in the car. “Open the door... oh.. window net.... ok, move that... oh... how do I get into this thing? uh, right leg up... uh now what do I do... grab on to something... drop in... whoops, should have put my other leg in first... Hit the key... oh... there's a starter button now... where is that again???? close the door... oops... window net... close the door... roll down the windo.... doh! :D
The cage ended up being an 8 point cage with horizontal crossbar, rear diagonal, rear crossbar, Petty bar and triangulated door bars on both sides. Seat brackets and seat back brace had to be fabricated as well as a headrest since the seat is a low-back design. Other added elements included corner gussets, master switch mounting plate attached to the cage, modifying the aftermarket window net kit to fit, 6 point harness installation, painting and padding installation. The entire project took just over 22 days to complete from the day it rolled into our shop

Next on the agenda is a 4 point rollbar for another open track round taillight BMW 2002! After that is a 6 point rollbar for a 1st Gen MR2.
Hmmm... at some point our own racecar needs a motor transplant before the March race at Gateway!
