Izzy's
RX7 Cage Install (p3)
The rollcage in Mark Jeffery's RX7 is finished!
The cage weighs right at 120-125 lbs including the cage pads and gussets.
Before the cage addition, the mostly stripped chassis checked in right at 1300 lbs with about 4 gallons of very nasty fuel in the stock tank. During the cage installation, we removed the stock tank and spare tire well in preparation for a fuel cell installation to be performed during the winter by Mark. We also removed all of the interior and floorpan undercoating and sound deadening material, including under the dash. Other odd's and ends were removed (heat sheild and exhaust brackets, various dash pieces that required removal to clear the cage) as well as gutted the drivers door for the Nascar style door bars. After the cage was finished, and the spare well, tank and estimated weight of the fuel added in, the chassis now weighs right at 1370 with the front weights within 4 lbs of the weight that the chassis started at.
Per Mark's request, IT legal jacking pads were installed. RX7's are known for having fairly fragile exterior rocker panels that are known to be crushed on most IT cars from being up and down after every session. Mark wanted a solid pad that he could jack the entire side from. The problem is that IT only allows the cage to “attach“ to the car in 6 spots (8 with the optional firewall braces). The work around is to run a bar to the floor with its pad resting against the floor. As long as the pad is not attached to the floor (by bolting, welding, glueing or other sticky substances) it is a legal addition.
Custom steel gussetts were formed for the passenger side X bars as well as stamped steel gussetts used throughout the cage. For anyone who'd like some steel gussetts formed to add to their own cage, shoot us an email or give us a call. Info on our homepage www.izzyscustomcages.com
