RX7 rear tri-link conversion and fuel cell relocation
There's a new 2 part project at Izzy's. In the coming weeks, I'll be documenting the installation of a third link and panhard bar conversion as well as the relocation of a previously installed Fuel Safe fuel cell in Mark Jeffery's (Midiv ITA Champ) IT7 RX.
The third link is a unit made by KC Raceware, while the panhard bar is a piece by ISC Racing Services, Inc.
The addition of a third link and panhard bar helps solve the inherant problem with the 1st gen RX7's rear suspension design. The offset watts link as well as the unsymetrical 4 links bind when the cars are lowered to racing heights and are prone to oversteer with very little effort. The third link eliminates the short upper control arms on either side of the rear housing and moves the axles upper suspension point forward to line up with the lower control arm mounts. The panhard takes over the side to side locating of the axle as well as lowers the roll center.
The panhard bar installation may interfere with the current placement of the fuel cell.
After the suspension conversion and fuel cell relocation, Mark will be bringing his new chassis in for a custom roll cage installation while he finishes his run for this seasons championship in his current RX7. Once the season is over, Mark is planning on starting a quality build-up of the new chassis.
