They are erecting digital signs that will vary the speed limit from 40 to 60 depending on traffic conditions.  I wonder what the overall impact will be...

I've thought of this idea many times, but it should work the other way too.  Low traffic, high visibility, dry surface = 80mph!  Also, trucks/trailer/rv should have their own lanes and speed limit.

    you just described Germany  [;)]

and trust me, US drivers aren't smart enough for that kind of common sense.

Adaptive speed limits are a great idea, and I'm glad to see St. Louis using them..   Now if only out here in Kansas I could see some signs with 5 diagonal stripes....

More government revenue from pesky traffic citations.  Additionally, there will be further confusion for those who are already confused on our everyday roads.

    P.S. I miss the Autobahn.

This changes nothing for me, as I will continue to do whatever the hell I want. [6]

I think that kind of defeats the purpose Jeff.  The idea of the system is to be able to slow traffic upstream of a high traffic area (accident, volume, etc) so that rather than have YOU bomb down the road at 80mph just to sit in bumper to bumper traffic going 3mph, YOU follow the speed limit that will drop your speed to ensure you don't have to sit in traffic.

Isn't the idea of Solo and PDX to teach us how to maintain our speed and get around the cars sitting in the way?

I finally saw one of the new signs today, though it was in the middle of the highway, not on the right like I expect speed limit signs to be.

The ones in South County from JB to 30 were on the right.  Some consistancy right.  No wonder the average drivers on cell phones and such can't see anything.
