7 Replies and 481 Views odd rotor useage pattern, is this because of autocross ?  481  7 Started by  root The outside 1/2' of the front rotors is not getting any action unless I brake very hard. You can see in the picture, the outside ring is still shiny, while the freshly exposed bonds on the inside section rust right away after a wash. &91url=http://img80.imageshack.us/my.phpimage=img05924re.jpg&93&91img&93http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/9510/img05924re.th.jpg&91/img&93&91/url&93 does anyone think this is normal I did two events this year, just wondering if this type of thing is commo...

11 Replies and 563 Views What are some good tires for 14x6?  563  11 Started by  Morwan I've started saving some money to buy a decent set of tires, but I'm not sure which set of tires I should be saving up for. Stock tires are 185/65, so I was thinking 195/60 would be wide enough. I think there was some rule of thumb about the maximum width, but I can't remember it. Right now I'm looking at Falken Azenis RT615, which is what the Celica guys seem to recommend... But they're a little pricey and I'm on a tight budget. I know the RT215's were $20 cheaper, are there any other tires ...

20 Replies and 1072 Views High Compression Engine Run On Pump Gas - Worst Case Scenario?  1072  20 Started by  krek
(Topic has multiple pages1 2 )
So I'm looking at a vehicle... can't inspect it before bidding ends because of geographic limitations. Guy selling it has owned it for 3 years and knows less about engines than I do. He has lost the build sheet he got when he purchased it, so he doesn't know anything about the engine except that he 'had it running last year and realized it had to run on racing fuel'. So, assuming he tried to run it on pump gas... what's the worst case scenario Detonation to the point of damaging the m...

16 Replies and 706 Views '06 MX-5 trim level for CS  706  16 Started by  sburkett ADD sets in again and I'm about to take delivery on a new MX-5 since no RX-7's that match my goofy requirements seem to be available... Anyway, it's mainly as a daily driver, but my son John and I will be autocrossing it so I should at least give some thought to competitiveness. I am semi-committed to buy a base model 5 speed, partly based on price, partly because I want a base model car, and partly because I hate the Miata 6 speed gearbox. But there's no LSD option, and to get one I have to ...

1 Replies and 422 Views picking tire for odd-sized rim, considering these 4  422  1 Started by  root So the autox season is coming up in our parts, and it's time get some tires.  I am planning to stick to the 'road tire' class, and will use these tires for everyday and autox purposes, so comfort is still part of consideration.  Main goals are 'decent' performance, nothing ultimate or anything, want to be able to upgrade further if decide to, and 'decent' comfort, don't want to turn deaf on long-distance trips, or break my back on the local potholes.   Already have a set of good all-seasons for ...

3 Replies and 362 Views Coilover issue...  362  3 Started by  Greg C Hi guys, I bought some Image Performance Coilovers for my 2005 Neon SXT and installed them last weekend.  These are true coilovers, not coilover sleeves.  Unfortunately, it is bouncing really bad even over tiny bumps.  I don't mean harsh either, I mean straight bounce.  They were tested with and without preload on the springs and it's bouncy either way.  The rest of the install is done according to the instructions provided with the coilovers. I have been discussin...

Rather than use the choke, it will only start at idle speed. While it is turning over it will make small poping sounds like it is trying to fire or raw gas is going into the muffler.  Even after it starts, it is reluctant to throttle up or run well under load. Any suggestions.....carb, spark/electr...

15 Replies and 791 Views RWD Street Tire Rec - summer street autocross  791  15 Started by  DavidDPD Yo all, dpdz back after a long break from s2o from down in Silicon Valley, CA ! I see things have changed a bit. Anywho ... a screw in the tire, and I find out because the wear bars are showing, its against the law to patch the tire (at least in CA) - go figure. Anyways, I'm moving away from the trailer truck R comps, and going to run the year or so on street tires with the 350z. So, I'm looking a rec on 245/45-18s for street tire autocrossing I'll still be running in BS, but most...

1 Replies and 293 Views Civic Tranny problems  293  1 Started by  Trollslayer I had a DX tranny in my Hatch out of a sedan/coupe but the main/input shaft bearings shelled out. I had a VX tranny with asstastically tall gears so I bought another tranny but didn't like the gearing in that one either. So I decided to tear the VX tranny down and put the gears out of the DX over into that case. Tranny went together smooth but when I put it back in the car I could not get the {insert profanity} thing into 5th or Reverse. I have pulled it and tore it back down 3 times in the last...

8 Replies and 294 Views Help......  294  8 Started by  MattG It always seems that anytime I start a car project something goes wrong or doesn't work right.  The set screw on my GC coilovers to adjust the perch height is siezed.  It uses an Allen wrench to lossen and is starting to round out, so I don't want to go farther.  Any suggestions on how to get it out I could leave it, throw everything back together and forget swapping springs.  I could lower the adjustable perches on the Konis to make up for the difference in Spring size, bu...

Running my 86 CRX in SM2 now and doing well. But the 5 year old Hoosiers are old and hard. I run 13x9 keizers. I am struggling with whether to buy 225/45/13 hoosiers again or go to kumhos smaller 215/50/13. car weights in at 1925 minus me. Seems like more and more people are going to the Kumhos. Any advise Thanks.

5 Replies and 273 Views Electrical Question  273  5 Started by  Bryan S First I hate automotive electrical issues as they can be so elusive and time consuming. So here's my puzzler. 2000 Golf GLS. Lois tells me that she has a headlight out. I plan to replace it today. So, we're comming home last night from my son's guitar recital, Lois realizes that now both low beams have gone out. No big deal, I was going to replace all of the lamps anyway. This morning I'm getting the lamps out and discover that the connection to the driver's side high beam is a bit toaste...

7 Replies and 405 Views Car won't jump start, but will when left alone  405  7 Started by  iMagnusX My friend had his lights on for 2 hours while we were playing ultimate frisbee. He came back, and it wouldn't start, so we jumped it. The first time we tried to start it we waited like 5min, then another 5 min, then 10min, and it still wouldn't start. I think that should be sufficient time with the battery power coming from my car, right Anyway, he says that the car has died and not been able to be jumped, but if he leaves it alone for a few hours, he'd be able to start it. We indeed came...
